Lynn University Volleyball vs Saint Leo, October 6, 2006, 7pm, Boca Raton, FL : BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Lynn University volleyball team dropped back to a .500 record as they fell to Saint Leo 3-0 at home Friday night. The Fighting Knights battled hard with the Lions but couldn't put it all together, falling 30-28, 30-18, 33-31 in Sunshine State Conference action. Senior Larissa Witherspoon led the Knights (8-8, 3-4 SSC) with a double-double, matching 13 kills with 13 digs on the night. Fellow senior Melissa Roberts joined her in double figure kills with 11 while sophomore libero Christie Schade added 15 digs. Setter Megan Bedner tied the match-high with 34 assists. The first game saw both squads unwilling to let the other take a large lead, trading tie points and leads down the wire. Saint Leo (14-5, 5-3 SSC) took their largest advantage of four twice, only to see the Knights respond. Down 28-24, Lynn scored four of the next five points to make it 29-28, forcing the Lions to call timeout and regroup. They did just that however, scoring on the next play to take the first game. Lynn struggled in the second frame, hitting just .056 and allowing five SLU aces. The Lions put together runs of 6-0 and 6-1, the latter to close out the game, to cruise to a 2-0 advantage. After an extended break between games two and three, the Knights came out with a new fire burning. Leading early by a 10-6 margin, Lynn responded to every Saint Leo counter-attack with one of their own, pushing the game into extended points. Down 30-29, LU would rally for the next two points for a chance to take the game. Saint Leo, behind another well called timeout, regrouped and scored the next three for match however.
