Pre-Game talk: After handling business against the Mean Green of North Texas, the Florida Atlantic University football team returned to the practice field to prepare for an important match up with the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns. The Owl defense worked against the Ragin Cajun' spread offense. FAU will have to contend with a tough combo of Michael Desormeaux at quarterback and Tyrell Fenroy at running back. The defensive line was able to put pressure on the scout team quarterback and Greg Joseph came away with a couple of tackles. The offense played well against North Texas, and tried to improve upon that in practice as sunset fell. The offensive line was able to create a lane for a couple of decent gains by Charles Pierre. Rusty Smith was able to connect on decent gains to Jamari Grant and Avery Holley, all while continuing to work on the no-huddle offense. Florida Atlantic University's football team will play host to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette 4 p.m., Saturday, November 15 at Lockhart Stadium. In honor of the Armed Forces, all individuals with a military ID will receive admission to the game for $7. FAU Athletics has also teamed up with Shopping for Soldiers to provide our injured soldiers and fallen soldier's families with goods and services donated from various supporters around the country. FAU Athletics will collect donated goods at this weekend's game. Fans will receive admission for $10 with a donated good. First 1,000 fans will also receive a koozie. FAU Football vs Memphsis, New Orleans BOWL, December 21, 2007, 7pm, FAU 44, Memphsis 27. : NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Howard Schnellenberger's reaction to having a bucket of icy sports drink dumped on him showed precisely why Florida Atlantic chose him to build their fledgling football program. The 73-year-old coach didn't flinch. He'd been there before. Now so has the team he started from scratch. Rusty Smith threw for 336 yards and a New Orleans Bowl record five touchdowns to lead Florida Atlantic to a 44-27 victory over Memphis on Friday night. "Obviously, we're really proud," Schnellenberger said. "We have a strong squad. I think we can compete with America." It was the first bowl game for FAU, which has had a football team for only seven seasons at its Boca Raton, Fla., campus and didn't join the NCAA's Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) until 2005. The victory was especially sweet for Owls players who had gotten all too used to the comedic refrain, "F-A-who?" when they would visit opponents whose teams had far more tradition. "People are now going to recognize and know who we are," said DiIvory Edgecomb, who scored two touchdowns and set up two other scores with kickoff returns of 42 and 62 yards. The game also marked another meaningful step for the young Sun Belt Conference. The league champion has now won three of seven New Orleans Bowls, including the past two by convincing margins, with Troy beating Rice 41-17 last year. It certainly wasn't the highest-profile bowl victory for Schnellenberger, who led Miami to the 1983 national championship with an Orange Bowl triumph over Nebraska. He is now 5-0 in bowl games over his 23 seasons as a head coach. He won the 1980 Peach Bowl with Miami and two bowl games with Louisville, the 1990 Fiesta Bowl and the 1993 Liberty Bowl. Still, this one had to be special, given that he is the father of FAU's program and the only head coach the Owls have ever known. The coach spoke warmly of his players, most of them from south Florida, who had faith in him. "They came in with the understanding that this was an opportunity for them to let their football lives have great meaning," Schnellenberger said. "They knew they were going to have to work harder, sacrifice more, sometimes be made fun of, but kept the faith and grew together until we got to the point now where we can compete with anybody in the nation." Florida Atlantic started fast and never trailed. Smith had 102 yards passing and a pair of touchdown tosses in the first 10 minutes. His second, a short pass that Edgecomb turned into a 29-yard score, gave FAU a 17-7 lead. Memphis quarterback Martin Hankins helped the Tigers keep the game competitive into the second half, throwing for 283 yards and three touchdowns. The Tigers got as close as 30-27 after his 6-yard touchdown to Carlos Singleton. But Memphis' next possession ended with a punt that Wilfred Rivera blocked to give the Owls the ball on the Tigers 19. Smith cashed in two plays later, finding Jason Harmon in the end zone for a 16-yard score and a 37-27 FAU lead. Hankins then left the game late in the third quarter with a right leg injury after getting tangled up in a heap of players after releasing a pass. Reserve quarterbacks Will Hudgens and Matt Malouf finished the game for Memphis, which couldn't muster a significant threat in the final quarter. "The blocked punt I thought was the turning point in the game," Memphis head coach Tommy West said. "It took the air out of us, then we lost our quarterback and it kind of went downhill from there." Smith, the game's most valuable player, also had touchdown passes of 4 yards to Charles Pierre, 16 yards to Chris Bonner and 4 yards to Willie Rose. "I'm so happy to help the team come to a victory in our first bowl appearance," Smith said. "I don't care if I throw for five interceptions. If we win, that's all that matters." Smith finished the season with 3,688 yards passing and 32 touchdowns. Only a sophomore, he could be around for many more victories in FAU's future.

FAU Football vs UF, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, November 17, 2007, 12pm. : GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - The Owls racked up 311 yards in the first half. Florida coach Urban Meyer didn't tell his players they were eliminated from the Southeastern Conference race Saturday. He didn't have to, either. The Gators were watching the scoreboard for updates and knew Georgia was beating Kentucky. They learned the final score in the locker room, a result that knocked Florida out of contention for the Eastern Division title. The Gators still had reasons to celebrate after hammering Florida Atlantic 59-20. Tim Tebow became the first player in NCAA history with at least 20 touchdowns passing and rushing in the same season and Andre Caldwell broke the school record for career receptions. "That's pretty cool," Tebow said. Tebow finished 25-of-34 passing for a career-high 338 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score. He has 20 rushing touchdowns and 26 TD passes. His 20th on the ground broke the previous SEC single-season record of 19 held by Georgia's Garrison Hearst (1992), Alabama's Shaun Alexander (1999) and LSU's LaBrandon Toefield (2001). Tebow certainly solidified his case for the Heisman Trophy. "He's definitely as deserving as the other guys out there," offensive coordinator Dan Mullen said. "He's had a phenomenal season. He's obviously a major, major part of our offense - one of the most important parts of our team - and he's a great person. If I had an award to give, he's a guy I wouldn't mind representing you for that award. "Caldwell caught a career-high 13 passes for 164 yards, giving him 177 career receptions and breaking the previous mark of 172 set by Carlos Alvarez (1969-71). "That means a lot to me because there's a lot of receivers that came throughout Florida history," Caldwell said. "This isn't like West Virginia or a school like that that doesn't throw the ball. This is the University of Florida. We throw the ball up and down the field. To be on top of that list is a big achievement. "Alvarez was on hand to see his record fall. He also witnessed another dominating performance by Tebow & Co. Tebow completed his first 10 passes for 145 yards, finding Caldwell open all over the field. Caldwell again filled in for Percy Harvin, who missed his second consecutive game because of a sinus infection and migraine headaches. Caldwell caught 11 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown last week at South Carolina. Tebow probably would have been on the bench by halftime, but Florida's defense struggled to stop Florida Atlantic's passing attack, so the sophomore stayed on long enough to turn a close game into a rout. The Gators (8-3) scored on nearly every possession. They led 21-0 after the first quarter, 35-20 at half and 52-20 early in the fourth. The Owls (5-5) moved the ball well, just not as well as Florida. They racked up 311 yards in the first half and presented plenty of problems early. Every time FAU got close, Tebow took over. His 2-yard run made it 28-13 with 5:04 to play in the first half, but FAU answered when quarterback Rusty Smith ran up the middle from a yard out with 1:13 remaining. That left plenty of time for Tebow, who capped a 63-yard drive with a 26-yard TD pass to Cornelius Ingram. "Tim didn't play his best game," Meyer said. "That's being critical. I'm being critical of Tim because he needs a little critical analysis every once in a while. He did not play his best game, but that tells you how good a football player he is." Still, Tebow ended the day with better numbers than any other college quarterback. "That's unbelievable," Meyer said. "I can't believe that's never been done before. That's a great record to have. I'd much rather have our ninth win next week." Tebow left with 11:11 remaining, giving way to freshman Cameron Newton. ebow's biggest flaw was an interception in the second quarter. His pass sailed over Louis Murphy's head and into Corey Small's hands. Small returned it 36 yards, setting up Smith's 20-yard TD pass to Cortez Gent that made it 21-10. Smith finished 18-of-33 for 290 yards. Gent caught six passes for 118 yards. FAU added to its woes with a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown in the first quarter and a fumble deep in its own territory that led to a field goal. "We made some plays intermittently, scored some points intermittently, but never quite made it happen," FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger said.

ULM evened the match just three seconds into the second quarter on a six-yard pass and took their first lead, 10-7, with 7:49 remaining in the half. FAU's William Rose hauled in a pass from Rusty Smith, who was 35-54-2 with 317 yards and a TD, to send the two teams to the locker room with FAU holding a 14-10 halftime advantage. The Owls' defense forced ULM to punt after three plays and delivered on a game-tying, 24-24, 10 play 88-yard drive the left 1:12 on the clock. The Owls drove from the 25 to the five. On fourth an one, the Owls elected to attempt a field goal which was blocked. ULM was given the same fate and saw their 38 yard field goal attempt miss. Cole Wilson connected from 33-yards to force FAU into a position of scoring. The Owls responded with a Leroy 37 yard field goal to push the score to 27 all and into yet another overtime period. FAU began with the ball on the 25 and drove four yards. Leroy then connected on a 24 yard field goal forcing ULM to score. Charles Pierre led the Owls ground attack with 73 yards and a score, but saw ULM's Calvin Dawson lead all rushers with 114 yards and two scores. Frantz Joseph, who entered the game as the Sun Belt's leading tackler added a game high 15 against ULM. Cergile Sincere, who is second in the league, added 12. Senior Taheem Acevedo had FAU's interception and 31 yard return to keep the Owls streak alive. Acevedo also had seven tackles, including one for a loss of two yard. FAU Football vs USF, University of South Florida, Lockhart Stadium, Fort Lauderdale, FL 06 October 2007 4pm : FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -South Florida's highest ranking in school history was nearly short-lived. Benjamin Williams ran for 186 yards and four touchdowns, Matt Grothe added 120 yards rushing and a score and the No. 6 Bulls held off fellow upstart Florida Atlantic 35-23 on Saturday. South Florida (5-0) committed four turnovers for the second straight game. But Williams and Grothe did enough to overcome the mistakes. Williams had a 10-yard scoring run to break a 7-7 tie in the third quarter. Grothe made it 21-14 with a spinning, juking, tackle-breaking 32-yard run two possessions later. Williams' second one was even better. He spun out of one tackle, broke two more and scampered 54 yards to make it 28-17 with about 10 minutes remaining. But Florida Atlantic (3-3) didn't quit in its first game against a top-10 opponent. Rusty Smith hooked up with DiIvory Edgecomb for a 47-yard strike, cutting the lead to 28-23 with 6:42 to play. The Owls missed the 2-point conversion. FAU forced two punts in the closing minutes, but couldn't put together a potential game-winning drive. Williams added a 9-yard run with 29 seconds remaining to seal the victory. It came after FAU failed to convert a fourth-down pass. South Florida may have expected a letdown after its 21-13 victory over then-No. 5 West Virginia eight days ago. But few could have seen a near meltdown coming. Then again, Howard Schnellenberger has spent the last seven years building his FAU program in the mold of Jim Leavitt's team, which has been around 11 seasons. Both relative newcomers are certainly closing the gap on Florida, Florida State and Miami. South Florida's latest win came with two key injuries. Defensive end George Selvie, who entered the game leading the nation in sacks, had one on the first series. But he was hurt a short time later and played sparingly the rest of the way. And running back Jamar Taylor sprained his left ankle and did not return. Williams and Grothe picked up the slack. Williams' yardage, touchdowns and 25 carries all were career highs. Grothe ran 14 times, and completed 17 of 27 passes for 122 yards with an interception. Smith was 23-of-47 passing for 259 yards for FAU. He had three TD passes and an interception. Grothe escaped two defenders on third-and-9, rolled right and found Amari Jackson for a 29-yard gain. The Bulls scored two plays later on Williams' 6-yard TD run, taking a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. FAU evened the score just before the half, taking advantage of Corey Small's interception. Small stepped in front of Grothe's pass and returned it to the 11-yard line. The drive nearly stalled, but on third down from the 12, Smith found Cortez Gent in the front corner of the end zone with 44 seconds to play. The Bulls had two other turnovers, both fumbles, and FAU looked poised to turn them into points. But Warley Leroy missed field goal after each one. Leroy missed a third, too. He was wide left from 36, 42 and 45 yards. He got a huge ovation as his extra point sailed through the uprights to tie the game.

(MIAMI, AP) - Rusty Smith threw for 463 yards and five touchdowns, and Florida Atlantic forced seven turnovers to beat Minnesota 42-39 Saturday. It was the first victory for Florida Atlantic against a Big Ten Conference team. Minnesota fell to 10-1 against Sun Belt Conference teams. Willie Rose caught two touchdown passes for the Owls (2-1), who gained 580 yards. Smith went 27-for-44. Adam Weber threw four touchdown passes for Minnesota (1-2), but also was intercepted four times. He finished 31-for-47 for 335 yards. Smith's final touchdown pass, a 16-yarder to Conshario Johnson, extended the Owls' lead to 42-24 in the fourth quarter before the Golden Gophers rallied. They scored twice on passes to Ernie Wheelwright, but an interception by Tavious Polo at the Florida Atlantic 35-yard line with three seconds left sealed the win. The score was 14-all before the Owls took advantage of two Minnesota turnovers to score three touchdowns in the second quarter and lead 35-14. Jay Thomas returned a kickoff 91 yards for Minnesota's first score.

(USA TODAY INSIDE SLANT) The Owls earned their first big signature win in the Football Bowl Subdivision/Division I-A era by holding off Big 10 foe Minnesota 42-39 on Sept. 15. FAU dominated the game early, building a 35-14 lead, and despite being outscored 25-7 in the second half, was able to hold on for the victory. "We felt our personnel was better than their personnel," FAU sophomore quarterback Rusty Smith told the Palm Beach Post. "We thought we had trained harder, were faster, stronger and more athletic. We came into this game knowing that. It turned out to be true." One key in the victory was FAU was able to run the ball, which helped Smith have a record-setting day with 463 yards passing and five touchdowns. Secondly, while the Owls allowed a lot of passing yards, they intercepted four passes and recovered three fumbles. The opportunistic offense, coupled with an offense that Minnesota had no answers for, allowed the Owls to improve to 2-1 (1-0) in the Sun Belt. NOTES, QUOTES. GAME BALL GOES TO: QB Rusty Smith, The sophomore threw for 463 yards and five touchdowns, both career highs, in the Owls' 42-39 victory over Minnesota. More importantly, he didn't throw an interception. KEEP AN EYE ON: TE Jason Harmon, The junior had five receptions for 104 yards against Minnesota. QUOTE TO NOTE: When you are in the infancy of a program, a win over a Big Ten team is significant and I intend to make the most of this win for these kids," FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger told the Palm Beach Post after the Owls' 42-39 victory over Minnesota. STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL: LOOKING GOOD: The Owls racked up 580 yards in total offense and didn't have a turnover in their 42-39 victory over Minnesota. QB Rusty Smith, The sophomore helped the Owls offense bounce back from a bad game (42-6 loss at Oklahoma State) with 463 yards passing and five touchdowns against Minnesota. FAU's defense forced seven turnovers against Minnesota. LB Frantz Joseph, The junior was all over the field against Minnesota. He had a team-high four tackles, forced a fumble and intercepted a pass. STILL NEEDS WORK: FAU jumped out to a 35-14 halftime lead at Minnesota, but the Owls were outscored 25-7 in the second half and had to hold on for a 42-39 victory. The Owls secondary did intercept four passes, but it allowed a whopping 335 yards passing against Minnesota. K Keegan Peterson averaged just 33.8 yards on five punts against Minnesota.

(Golden Gopher, MN) Before game day: "Minnesota has never lost to a current member of the Sun Belt Conference and is 10-0 all time against the league, including a 2-0 mark in road games. The Gophers’ last game against a Sun Belt Conference member came at home against Florida Atlantic in 2005. Minnesota’s last road game at a Sun Belt Conference school occurred 2002, when the Gophers romped to a 35-11 victory at Louisiana-Lafayette. In its 10 games against current Sun Belt members, Minnesota has scored an average of 40.4 points, with an average margin of victory of nearly 32 points per game. In fact, the Gophers have been held below 30 points by just one Sun Belt foe (Arkansas State in 1998). Florida Atlantic, which is in just its seventh year of existence and third year in the NCAA’s Bowl Subdivision, also enters Saturday’s match-up looking to move to 2-1 on the young season. The Owls opened the year with an impressive 24-17 victory over Middle Tennessee as FAU held the Blue Raiders to 217 yards of total offense. Florida Atlantic was unable to sustain the momentum last week at Oklahoma State, however, falling to the Cowboys 42-6 in Stillwater. Legendary head coach Howard Schnellenberger, who won a national championship at Miami (Fla.) in 1983 and started the FAU program from scratch when he was hired in 2000, will be looking to get his Owls back on the right track after being held to just 203 yards of total offense last week at Oklahoma State."
