Summer Olympics, 29th Olympiad , Beijing China, Commencing 8 Aug 2008. Beijing National Stadium : The 2008 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony was held at the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest. It began at 8:00 PM China Standard Time (UTC+8) on 8 August 2008. The number 8 is associated with prosperity and confidence in Chinese culture. The attendance to this event was not recorded as such but the figure would have rose to being over 100,000 despite it only being a 91,000 seat stadium. The ceremony was directed by Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou and was noted for its focus on ancient Chinese culture, and for its creativity. The musical score for the ceremony was arranged by composer Tan Dun. The final ascent to the torch featured Olympic gymnast Li Ning, who appeared to run through air around the top ring of the stadium. Featuring more than 15,000 performers, the ceremony lasted over four hours and was reported to have cost over $100 million to produce. The opening ceremony was lauded by spectators and various international presses as spectacular and even the "greatest ever." Rolling Thunder Washington DC Memorial Day 2005 Honoring Veterans : Ride For Freedom XVIII, May 29th, 2005 - Rolling Thunder®, Inc.'s major function is to publicize the POW-MIA issue. To educate the public of the fact that many American prisoners of war were left behind after all past wars. To help correct the past and to protect the future veterans from being left behind should they become prisoners of war-missing in action. We are committed to helping American veterans from all wars.

May 25, 2008: Rolling Thunder roared into Washington, D.C., on Sunday for its annual veterans tribute, bringing together an estimated 350,000 motorcyclists — along with thousands of activists, fans and spectators. Bikers from the group's 88 chapters —across the country and overseas— came together to bring attention to U.S. service members held captive or missing in action. Riders took off on their rumbling "Ride For Freedom," driving from the Pentagon, across the Potomac River by way of the Memorial Bridge and on to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The party-like atmosphere was punctuated by speeches, tributes and music. Actor John Amos, who read Gen. Colin Powell's "A Letter to a Soldier" lent his voice to the cause. "This is the most important gathering I have ever been apart of. I share their convictions that all these men and woman must be accounted for. We live in the greatest country in the world, and a gathering like this confirms that we have more freedom," Amos said. President Bush also met with some of the group's organizers, and described the parade of motorcycles — many adorned with the American flag as "a magnificent sight. "I am just so honored, and I want to thank you and all your comrades for being patriotic and loving our country as much as you do," said Bush. Organizers then presented President Bush with a leather biker's vest and cap. Rolling Thunder 21, along with honoring the families of fallen and missing service members, are advocating for the fair treatment of veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

St. Patrick's Day event, Delray Beach Atlantic Avenue 41st Annual event, March 14, 2009 2pm : Delray Beach - Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day - or Jamaican, if you were in downtown Delray Beach Saturday. The 41st St. Patrick's Day Parade was infused with a "Jamaican Me Irish" theme. "Both cultures like to party and have fun and both have cool accents," said Nancy Stewart, of Festival Management Group, which took over organizing the parade last year. "We had a lot of calls from people who thought it was blasphemous and others who felt it was a fun idea." The event, which drew thousands, shut down East Atlantic Avenue from Swinton Avenue to the east side of the Intracoastal Waterway for nearly three hours of revelry. Crowds were especially heavy in front and near the many bars that line the street. Related links Delray Beach St. Patrick's Day Parade Photos There was also the Jamaican Me Irish festival on the grounds of Old School Square. But most of all there were green beads, green beards and green beer. There was full body green, too, like Dylan Siska. The 31-year-old was painted green from head to toe in honor of Ireland's patron saint: St. Patrick, who spread Christianity through the Emerald Isle in the fifth century. "We're a little bit Irish," said Siska, who rode in a tandem bike with Danielle DiRosa before the floats flooded the avenue. "But today is just about having a good time." The parade itself featured more than 100 local firefighters from cities like Plantation, Coral Springs and Delray Beach. There were also plenty of bagpipes, fire trucks, Ford Model T's, monster trucks and a pack of skateboarders performing tricks as the parade moved west to Swinton Avenue. And there was Petunia, a 15-year-old potbellied pig who's been the mascot of the parade since she was born.

NASA Space Shuttle Mission March 13, 2009 among other Shuttle mages : The STS-119 flight will deliver the final pair of power-generating solar array wings and truss element to the space station. The delivery and installation of the station’s final, major U.S. truss segment, Starboard 6 (S6), during the STS-119 mission will signal the station’s readiness to house a six-member crew for conducting increased science. With the installation of the 31,127-pound, 45.4-foot-long segment, the station’s completed truss, or backbone, will measure 335 feet – more than the length of a football field. Air Force Col. Lee Archambault (ARSH-um-boh) will lead the STS-119 crew. Navy Cmdr. Tony Antonelli will serve as the pilot. The mission specialists for the flight are Joseph Acaba, John Phillips, Steve Swanson, Richard Arnold and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Koichi Wakata (Ko-EE’-chee Wa-KAH’-tah). Wakata will remain on the station, joining Expedition 18 Commander E. Michael Fincke, an Air Force colonel, and Flight Engineer Yury Lonchakov (LAHN'-chuh-coff), a Russian Air Force colonel. Wakata will replace Expedition 18 Flight Engineer Sandra Magnus, who will return to Earth with the STS-119 crew. Wakata will serve as a flight engineer for Expeditions 18 and 19. Fincke and Lonchakov were launched to the complex in the Soyuz TMA-13 spacecraft on Oct. 12, 2008, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Wakata will return to Earth on shuttle mission STS-127, while Fincke and Lonchakov will return in the Soyuz in April. The space station’s solar arrays are the largest deployable space assemblies ever built and the most powerful electricity-producing arrays in orbit. Until deployed, each SAW remains folded in a special canister called a Solar Array Assembly (SAA) at the end of the S6 element. In the canister, each wing is equipped with an expandable mast. Two solar array blanket boxes, containing 32,800 solar cells, are connected to the ends of each canister and are restrained to the element frame for launch. The addition of S6 brings the station’s total SAWs to eight. Each wing is 115 by 38 feet wide and, when all eight are fully deployed, will encompass an area of 32,528 square feet, minus the masts. The 310-foot integrated truss structure to which the S6 will be attached forms the backbone of the space station, with mountings for unpressurized logistics carriers, radiators, solar arrays, and the various elements. The 45-foot-long S6 began as an operations test item for its twin sister, the Port 6 truss segment that was launched during Endeavour’s STS-97 mission on Nov. 30, 2000. The starboard element was delivered to Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Dec. 17, 2002. Boeing, NASA’s prime contractor for the station, designed the S6 and worked with major subcontractors Lockheed Martin, Honeywell, Space Systems/Loral, and Hamilton Sundstrand to build it. Pratt and Whitney Rocketdyne provided most of the electrical power system components. The PVMs use large numbers of solar cells assembled onto solar arrays to produce high power levels. NASA and Lockheed Martin developed a method of mounting the solar arrays on a “blanket” that can be folded like an accordion for delivery to space and then deployed to its full size once in orbit. The cells are made from purified crystal ingots of silicon that directly convert light to electricity for immediate use through a process called photovoltaics. Gimbals are used to rotate the arrays so that they face the sun to provide maximum power to the space station. After the conversion process, the PVMs also use the electricity to recharge onboard batteries for continuous sources of electricity while the station is in the Earth’s shadow. Once complete, the station power system, consisting of U.S. and Russian hardware and four photovoltaic modules, will use between 80 – 100 kilowatts of power or about as much as 42 average houses (defined as 2,800 square feet of floor space using 2 kilowatts each). Some of the electricity is needed to operate space station systems, but once that is figured in, the addition of the S6 will nearly double the amount of power available to perform scientific experiments on the station – from 15 kilowatts to 30 kilowatts. Each SAW weighs more than 2,400 pounds and uses 32,800 solar array cells, each measuring 8 centimeters square with 4,100 diodes. The individual cells were made by Boeing’s Spectrolab and Aviation Systems Engineering Co. There are 400 solar array cells to a string and there are 82 strings per wing. Each SAW is capable of generating 32.8 kilowatts, or about 10.5 to 15 kilowatts of usable power. There are two SAWs on the S6 module capable of delivering a combined 21 to 30 kilowatts of usable power per PVM with a total of four PVMs on the station. The solar arrays produce more power than can be made available to the station’s systems and experiments. Because all or part of the solar arrays are eclipsed by the Earth or station structure at times, batteries are used to store electricity for use during those periods. About 60 percent of the electricity generated is used to recharge the batteries.

Florida Marlins vs Washington Nationals, MLB event Monday, April 6, 2009 4:10pm Dolphin Stadium, Miami, Florida : MIAMI -- So much for sacrificing power for speed. At least for one day, the Marlins showcased plenty of both in an impressive 12-6 rout of the Nationals on a picturesque Monday afternoon at Dolphin Stadium. You can't draw it up a much more ideal Opening Day than this. An energized crowd of 34,323 at Dolphin Stadium was introduced to a revamped roster that didn't disappoint in either entertaining or producing. Showing there is plenty of pop in the lineup, Florida delivered four home runs. Hanley Ramirez belted his first career grand slam and ended the day with five RBIs. Jorge Cantu and Jeremy Hermida each went deep, but the player who stole the show was speedy Emilio Bonifacio. The 12 runs on 12 hits provided plenty of cushion for Ricky Nolasco to collect the win on a day the offense took over. In six innings, Nolasco gave up five runs (four earned) with six strikeouts. Making his Marlins debut, Bonifacio had a dream beginning -- four hits, four runs scored, two RBIs, three stolen bases and an inside-the-park home run. It was his first homer in the Majors, and if you blinked, you missed it. Bonifacio, clocked at 3.86 seconds from home to first base, blistered around the bases, prompting the crowd to cheer on a curtain call. "We think the kid can play," team president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said after Florida improved to 9-8 on Opening Day. "Again, it's one game, and I don't want to blow it out of proportion. He had a great game. What a great start. We can see what he can do on the bases and energize this team in a lot of ways. We think he's a good player. He's still developing." Bonifacio's inside-the-park home run off Julian Tavarez in the fourth inning came on his 195th big league at-bat, and his third as a Marlin.

The 23-year-old is the 14th Marlin to hit an inside-the-park homer, and the 11th to do it at Dolphin Stadium. To find the last time an inside-the-park home runs happened on Opening Day, you have to go back 41 years. Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski of the Red Sox did it on April 10, 1968, at Tiger Stadium. Ramirez, meanwhile, is expected to produce power. After leading off primarily for three seasons, the 25-year-old moved to the No. 3 spot. In the past, he struggled with runners in scoring position, batting .239 in that category last year. The All-Star shortstop is the third Marlin to belt a grand slam on Opening Day. It was last done by Juan Encarnacion in 2005 against Atlanta's John Smoltz in the first inning. Preston Wilson did it in 2002, at Montreal. In the third inning, Ramirez added an RBI double off Nationals starter John Lannan. Now in a power spot of hitting third, Ramirez will be counted on to drive in runs. "I was trying to do too much," Ramirez said of his past struggles while hitting with runners in scoring position. "I've been learning in batting practice every day." In his first three seasons with the Marlins, Ramirez accomplished an awful lot at the plate. The All-Star matched his franchise record with 125 runs scored last year, in a season where he paced the Major Leagues in that category. What he hadn't done, until Monday, was connect on a grand slam. That changed in the sixth inning. After John Baker walked, Steven Shell relieved Wil Ledezma. On a 1-1 pitch, Ramirez crushed a curveball into the seats above the American League sign of the high scoreboard. The last grand slam he hit was in the Minor Leagues. "That helps our confidence," Ramirez said. "It's just the first game. We have 161 to go. We just have got to stay in focused and stay together."
